Describing Myself: A Challenge with Depth and Detail

2–3 minutes

In today’s writing prompt, we were asked, “How would you describe yourself to someone who can’t see you?” At first glance, this seemed like a straightforward task, but the more I pondered it, the more complex it became. I considered the idea that this person might be visually impaired, which shifted my focus to creating a vivid picture with words—capturing not just what I look like but the essence of who I am.

First off, let’s get the basics out of the way. I stand at 5’3″ and weigh around 130 pounds. My background is a fascinating blend of Japanese and Irish heritage, and I might even have some other nationalities mixed in there that I haven’t quite discovered yet. Physically, I’m relatively thin but well-proportioned. My dark brown hair is medium-length and usually styled with a side part, giving me a polished yet approachable look.

When it comes to my wardrobe, I have a distinct style that reflects my personality. During my professional hours, you’ll often find me dressed in floral or small-print shirts, tucked neatly into slacks and paired with dress shoes—anything that conveys a sense of professionalism while keeping it stylish. But when the weekend rolls around? I embrace comfort fully, grabbing a black t-shirt, comfortable shorts, and slippers for a laid-back vibe.

One accessory I feel lost without is my watch. It rests on my left wrist and serves not just a functional purpose but also a sentimental one. Without it, I feel like something is missing—a part of my daily rhythm that keeps me grounded. I tend to steer clear of flashy jewelry, opting for a simple, understated style that feels true to who I am.

Describing myself to someone who can’t see me is not just about listing physical traits; it’s about conveying the essence of my identity through words. It’s an exercise in reflection, allowing me to appreciate the intricate details that comprise my personality and appearance. Through this prompt, I learned that our identities are formed through a tapestry of traits, experiences, and expressions, woven together to create a unique picture of who we are.

In the end, while I might provide a somewhat literal description of my physical appearance, what I’m really sharing is a small insight into the person I am and how I navigate the world around me. It’s a reminder that every detail, no matter how small, helps paint a fuller picture of our identities—even for those who may not have the means to see it.

I just learned something new about you through this…you are part irish, which means we have something in common other than our blogs. Did you grow up with any Irish culture or was it strictly Japanese?

I was raised more Italian, but I really can see the Irish in me come out.

Oh, it’s a shame. I’m not very familiar with my Irish roots. I was mostly brought up surrounded by Japanese traditions.
