Together We Stand: A Poetic Reflection on Hawaii’s Resilience

In Waikiki’s bright, golden glow,
A whisper spread, both fast and slow,
A warning came, both swift and clear,
A tsunami threat stirred up our fear.

The earth had rumbled far away,
An 8.8, they would say,
With urgency, we hit the streets,
In search of safety, where hope repeats.

Memories rushed from days of old,
Of childhood fears that turned to bold,
When crowded roads met anxious hearts,
As chaos reigned and confusion starts.

But hand in hand, our community rose,
Checking in, sharing tales of woes,
A bond grew strong through tests of dread,
With love as our guide, we bravely tread.

As night wore on, tension did ease,
An advisory brought calm, hearts pleased,
We held our breath, then could exhale,
The storm had passed, we did not fail.

Now we gather, with stories to share,
Of moments faced, with love in the air,
Grateful we are, in safety we stand,
Hawaii’s spirit, united, hand in hand.

Wow! Glad you are safe. We on Vancouver Island, did not see much of anything. Better to be safe than sorry.

We managed to experience the tsunami waves, but fortunately, they weren’t too massive. We were quite lucky.

Keito so glad to know you and everyone are safe. These experiences turn to memories that are difficult at times aren’t they. Thankfully there was no devastation.

It’s been ages since we’ve had any really bad storms. Can you believe we’re right in the middle of hurricane season? Phew, we managed to avoid a disaster once again.

Hurricane and then the tsunami… you didn’t need all that. Thankful, a disaster avoided.

    Beautiful poem!

My husband, adult son, and I were on Oahu in 2010 when there was a tsunami warning.

Over the five hours that we spent at our evacuation stay at the Dole pineapple plantation, we learned a wealth of information about pineapples and enjoyed our time there.

I remember that. Well, at least you have a good memory of it.
