In the morning light, a scent did arise,
Strange and haunting beneath the skies.
Unfamiliar whispers, I brushed them away,
No thoughts of you, my neighbor, colored my day.
Homeward bound, a scene did unfold,
A police officer by your door, bold.
Curiosity stirred, but I held my breath,
That fragrance lingered, a shadow of death.
Dinner’s warmth filled the evening air,
Yet a chilling thought pierced, despair.
Could it be what I fear, so deeply profound?
Was it your spirit, lost, now unbound?
I watched the gurney, Joe wrapped in a blanket,
Rolling past my apartment, a moment so stark,
Memorials arrived, their somber task,
To carry you home, no questions to ask.
A gentle soul, quiet and shy,
With simple highs and goodbyes we’d tie.
Rest in peace, dear neighbor Joseph, farewell,
In now empty halls, your memories dwell.
Though today I felt the weight of the day,
In the heart’s silent echoes, you’ll forever stay.
