While I really enjoy celebrating the Fourth of July, I find one aspect bothersome. My biggest pet peeve is the crazy consumerism that seems to take over the holiday. It’s wild how quickly we get caught up in the hunt for sales and discounts. We often forget what this holiday is really about.
I know I’m part of the problem, just like everyone else. I mean, who doesn’t love scoring a good deal? But when we focus too much on shopping for barbecues, summer gear, and everything in between, we kind of lose sight of the true meaning of Independence Day. It starts feeling more like a shopping spree than a celebration of our freedom.
On the flip side, I do work as a furniture design consultant at a high-end furniture store, so I have to acknowledge that this time of year brings in some decent business. It creates a bit of a balancing act for me. I understand the need to make a living, but it’s hard to ignore how consumerism overshadows the real reason we celebrate the Fourth of July.
As we enjoy the day with friends and family, let’s try to remember what this holiday signifies: our country’s independence and the freedom we value. Instead of getting lost in the shopping frenzy, let’s focus on connection, gratitude, and togetherness. How do you feel about the consumerism around Independence Day?
