Which food, when you eat it, instantly transports you to childhood?
Some foods have a way of bringing back memories, don’t they? For me, that magical dish is Loco Moco, a beloved Hawaiian classic that takes me back to my childhood in Hilo. Every time I dig into this hearty meal, I’m transported to those afternoons after school when I would swing by Café 100 to satisfy my cravings.
Loco Moco is a simple yet delicious combination that features rice, a hamburger patty, brown gravy, and a sunny-side-up egg. It’s a staple in Hawaiian cuisine, and many locals treasure it as a comforting favorite. This dish was reportedly created in Hilo back in 1949. It was meant to be a quick, inexpensive meal for hungry teenagers. Over the years, it has become so much more.
What makes Loco Moco so satisfying? It starts with sticky white rice, which is the perfect base for the other ingredients. You have a juicy, seasoned beef patty on top. It’s smothered in rich brown gravy made from beef broth and soy sauce. Sometimes, there are added mushrooms or onions. And let’s not forget the sunny-side-up egg, with its runny yolk mixing into the gravy—it’s pure comfort on a plate! I know I might be adding a lot of starch with my usual side of fries, but when it comes to comfort food in Hawaii, that’s just how we roll!

Growing up in Hilo meant that family meals often included a visit to a beloved spot like Café 100. One of my favorite memories is from my days as a paperboy for the Hawaii Tribune-Herald. As a reward, our district manager would treat us to Café 100, and I always made sure to order the Loco Moco along with those crispy fries. It’s funny how a dish can bring back such happy memories of laughter and good times with family and friends.
Loco Moco isn’t just for breakfast; it’s a meal you can enjoy any time of the day. Each bite reminds me of my childhood and the special moments growing up in Hilo. Whenever I indulge in Loco Moco, I’m not just enjoying a meal—I’m savoring a piece of my past that I hold dear.
