Part 1: The Visit

Jake never cared too much about New Year’s Eve; it always felt like just another night. But this year? It was different. Something about the chill in the air and the sparkles of lights outside his apartment made him feel oddly anticipatory. Still, here he was, slumped on his couch, wrestling with a half-eaten pizza and the TV blaring the same old countdown specials.

As the minutes ticked down, he couldn’t shake the nostalgia. “Remember when you wanted to be a writer?” his mind whispered, making him chuckle at the memory. Writing felt like a distant dream, buried under layers of responsibilities and mundane adulthood.

Finally, when the clock struck ten, a soft knock echoed through his apartment. He jumped, puzzled. “Who could that be?” With a shrug of resignation, he opened the door, and there stood a flickering figure, glowing with an ethereal light that made him squint.

“Jake!” the apparition exclaimed, radiating a surprising sense of familiarity. “It’s me—well, it’s you! Your former self.”

“Right. And I’m the king of England!” Jake shot back sarcastically, inching the door open wider.

“No, really! I’m here as a ghost to remind you of who you used to be. We need to talk about your dreams—those lost ones you let go of,” Former Jake continued, his excitement almost contagious.

Jake blinked, still trying to wrap his head around the surreal moment. “Okay, and how do you plan on doing that?”

“By reclaiming your aspirations! We have until midnight.” The ghost’s enthusiasm was undeniable. “Remember that epic book you always dreamed about writing?”

Jake’s heart skipped a beat. “Yeah, I think it was called ‘The Sky’s the Limit’ or something cringe-worthy like that.”

“Exactly! Let’s go back to those moments you gave up on. Together, we’ll find that lost inspiration and make it shine again.”

As Jake processed this, a strange mixture of hope and skepticism bubbled inside him. Could his ghostly self really lead him to reclaiming what he’d lost? “Fine. So, how exactly do we start?”

With the ghost’s mischievous smile widening, he pointed dramatically at the clock. “Hold on tight! I’ll show you how to unlock those memories. Just trust me.”

Suddenly, a whirlwind of light enveloped them, swirling like a galaxy of memories. Jake squeezed his eyes shut, uncertainty tingling in his gut.
